Description
An “inner Kevlar set” generally refers to the removable internal ballistic panels made of Kevlar or another aramid fiber that are inserted into the carrier of a bulletproof or protective vest. These panels provide the actual ballistic protection, while the outer carrier is often a fabric shell that holds them in place and can be washed separately.
Function and Use:
- Ballistic Protection: The core function of the inner Kevlar set is to stop or slow down projectiles (like bullets from handguns or shrapnel) by absorbing and dispersing their kinetic energy across a wide area of tightly woven fibers.
- Concealability: In soft body armor, these inner panels are designed to be relatively thin and flexible, allowing the entire vest to be worn discreetly under normal clothing, such as a suit, for personal security, by bodyguards, or law enforcement in plain clothes.
- Modularity: The “set” often includes panels for the front, back, and sometimes the sides of the torso. These panels can be removed from the outer carrier for cleaning, maintenance, or replacement if damaged or expired.
- Multi-threat Use: While the soft Kevlar panels are effective against most handgun rounds, they can be used in conjunction with “hard armor” plates (made of ceramic or steel) inserted into additional pockets in the carrier to provide protection against higher-velocity rifle rounds.
Materials:
Kevlar is a brand name for a synthetic aramid fiber that has an extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, about five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis. The material’s strength comes from its long molecular chains that are cross-linked with hydrogen bonds, forming a tough, net-like structure when woven into fabric layers. Other similar materials like Dyneema or Spectra Shield may also be used depending on the manufacturer and required protection level.
